NSE vs BSE: Which Ticker Should You Use with the API?

Updated 2026-10-18

India has two main stock exchanges, the NSE and the BSE, and most large companies are listed on both. When you call the API you pass a ticker symbol — here's how to get the right one.

Tickers are exchange symbols

Use the plain exchange symbol in uppercase — RELIANCE, TCS, INFY — not the .NS/.BO suffixes some other providers use. For a company listed on both exchanges, the plain ticker resolves to the NSE listing by convention.

When a ticker is shared by two companies

Occasionally the same symbol belongs to two different companies — one on NSE and a different one on BSE. In that case you can disambiguate with an exchange parameter to reach the specific listing you want.

Resolving a name to a ticker

If you only have a company name, call GET /v1/search with the name or a partial symbol — it returns the matching NSE/BSE tickers you then pass to every other endpoint. You can also browse the full universe on the stocks directory. See the search reference for details.
